What is Anatomy in Motion (AiM)

Walking is a whole body movement. What I mean by that is that when you walk every part of your body will be set in motion. 

Delving down deeper into that, we know that you can walk efficiently or not efficiently, and it is the ‘not walking efficiently’ that leads to structural changes in your body. Structural change or postural imbalance is therefore directly influenced by how you walk. 

When you seek a practitioner, they may consider your posture but it’s unlikely they would consider that your posture is influenced by your long term, set in stone, habitual way that you walk.

The way people walk affects everything from their physical potential to their daily pain.

Walking is a pattern that you repeat on a daily basis. You do not change the way you walk. It is a fixed and constant repeated pattern in your body. To change it takes significant external influence. 

Anatomy in Motion is that 'significant external influence'.

In more detail:

Anatomy in Motion (AiM) is a cutting-edge method of correcting postural problems, relieving pain, helping with injury-repair/rehab, reducing the likelihood of future injury and improving physical performance. It requires very little equipment and is based around very different principles to most exercise therapies. For starters, the importance of the feet and the hips are not overlooked. It can be incredibly effective, incredibly quickly.

The first session will involve an initial assessment of the body's posture and walking habits. The first things to tackle are each individuals movement inefficiencies and limitations and  everybody has them, believe me.

Although I generally start gently, clients often feel that they've woken up some unused muscles, even in the first session.

From there the session content will depend entirely on the individuals requirements. This is sometimes a case of 'peeling off layers of an onion' to find and rectify the root cause of a problem. Sometimes it's very obvious what the root cause is and the body is ready to take on the new information immediately - when this is the case, an issue can be resolved in a very few sessions and can frequently remain resolved indefinitely. Sometimes a specific set of 1, 2 or 3 exercises that can be performed by the client, as soon as they feel the issue is at risk of returning, is all that is required once AiM has done it's magic. Sometimes an issue, particularly an old one, can take more 'unraveling' to get to the bottom of, therefore requiring more sessions. Some issues can be brought-on by outside influences which, unless discovered and resolved, can mean that the issue will keep returning - for example shoe choice, a heavy handbag or case, the set-up of a computer, desk and chair, a sport or hobby.

These one-to-one sessions are suitable for any level of ability or activity - from those who are in pain or can barely get up and down the stairs, to those who want to compete athletically. The AiM method is highly adaptable and can be very gentle (yet firm). It is always highly respectful of the individual body's capabilities.

Pain relief, joint mobility, energy levels, muscle tightness or weakness, sports performance and posture can all be boosted through Anatomy in Motion (AiM) sessions.

A body that moves effectively and optimally will be accessing far more of the muscles in the body, including the fabled 'core' muscles, through everyday movement.

Most bodies are not functioning correctly and therefore certain muscles are rarely used and others become tight and overworked, just through daily living.

The common muscles that don't get used, as a result of poor function, are the buttocks, upper back and abdominal's. The common ones that overwork (and therefore complain) are the lower back, hamstrings and upper shoulders/neck.

Then if I tell you that there are frequently also certain joints that don't move enough and therefore others that overwork, in order to compensate, and that the compensators are often the knee, sacroiliac joint, lower back and neck...

For those looking for pain relief and joint mobility
Depending on the clients requirements, the goal is to enable the client to NOT REQUIRE CONSTANT REPEAT APPOINTMENTS. As a back-up, the client will have 2 or 3 exercises that are specific to their issue, that they can do themselves should the issue raise it's head again. An occasional check-up is wise, but not obligatory, if the situation is under control. If I do not feel that I can help your situation further, I will tell you so.

Following a thorough assessment, the movements chosen are specific to the client and their problem/s. Particularly in the case of pain, the client will soon understand that the pain is rarely where the problem is, or, if you like, the problem is rarely where the pain is. We stay away from the pain in Anatomy in Motion.

For those looking for aesthetic results and improved posture
After AiM most bodies appear and feel taller, longer and more slender. Also, a body that is working optimally will move with more ease and grace, using all the correct muscles on a day-to-day basis. For example, very few bodies use their buttock muscles correctly, if at all, when walking and these are the largest and most powerful muscles in the body. The AiM method can wake these muscles up like nothing else - you have to feel it to believe it!
